A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant questions over operational security.

- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.

Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
