The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
