The anticipation about The Game Awards has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
