Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
