Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest certain calls made by the official, echoing the system already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
